Being one of the oldest university libraries in China, the history of Zhejiang University Library can be traced back to 1897 when Qiushi Academy Library was founded. On September 15 1998, former Zhejiang University, Hangzhou University, Zhejiang Agricultural University and Zhejiang Medical University merged to form the new Zhejiang University, the libraries of these universities were correspondingly merged into the unified Zhejiang University Library (ZUL). In January 2009, Zhejiang University Library and Zhejiang University network & information center merged into the Zhejiang University Library & Information Center.

ZUL consists of five branch libraries: Yuquan Campus Library, Xixi Campus Library, Huajiachi Campus Library, Agriculture & Medical Science Library and Basic Branch Library in Zijingang Campus, with a building area of 86,000 square meters and 5282 seats. So far, the total collections of the library amount to 5,496,000 volumes, including 180,000 thread-bound ancient Chinese books. The Zhejiang University Collections have collected about 10000 Academic publications and manuscripts by the University faculty members and alumni. The Digitized literature resource of ZUL rank highest level among the Chinese university libraries and approaches to the topmost level of famous university libraries in the world. Currently ZUL holds over 400 databases covering all disciplines of Zhejiang University, 1,510,000 Chinese and foreign e-books, nearly 50,000 Chinese and Foreign e-journals. Zhejiang University is planning to build a new Library & Information Center building in Zijingang Campus now. The services will be further enhanced after being completed.

ZUL has six service divisions, namely Research & Development Division, Circulation & Reading / Reader Service Division, Reference Division, Acquisitions & Cataloging / Resource construction Division, Digital Library research and technology center, Ancient Books & Special Collection Divisions, Library Administration Office is located in Yuquan campus. MeanwhileZUL includes 6 subject libraries, namely Engineering Library, Science Library, Social Science Library, Humanities Library, Agriculture Library, Medical Science Library (non-physical libraries), meeting the demand of 7 the university faculties. In addition, ZUL has Resource Director, Service Director, Cooperation Director and Technical Director, balancing and coordinating the development of those service divisions.

The library has advanced service management system that books from the all the branch libraries can be borrowed, returned and placed holds with each other. The library is actively involved in the freshmen education, integrating various forms of guidance activities into the school education system; actively uses modern technology to provide novelty search, citations, document delivery and other services; also actively strengthens the protection and reveal of ancient work, and continues to promote the construction of special collections.

ZUL actively involves in resource sharing and digitalized construction of Chinese higher education. Zhejiang University conducts the project University Digital Library International Cooperation Program (China Academic Digital Associative Library, CADAL) cooperating with worldwide universities and research institutions. At present, the phase one is completed and phase two is in progress. ZUL also acts as the provincial center of Zhejiang University Digital Library (ZADL) and the leading library of technical groups, resource groups, service groups, conducting the project management, the construction work and other tasks. It sets a good example and contributes to construct provincial digital libraries. CADAL and ZADL project will further promote the development of digital library technology, giving the resources and technology foundation for sustainable development of the digital library construction and service work.
